Larry has been the Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at the University of Indianapolis since 2007. There, he teaches applied trumpet, brass masterclass, coaches student brass groups, and performs with the UIndy Faculty Brass, and chairs the Indiana International Trumpet Guild Conference.

He spent two years of his college studies with Vincent DiMartino at the University of Kentucky starting in 1984. Vince inspired him in the early 80’s and continues to inspire now, as a trumpet player, educator, colleague, and friend.

In 1987 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served at the Pentagon in administration. After leaving the U.S. Air Force in 1991, Larry transferred to and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Indianapolis in K-12 All Area Music Education, graduating in 1993. He later earned a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance degree from Butler University in 2001.

Since arriving in Indiana, Larry started Powell Music, a musician contracting company and he has established himself as a top-tier utility trumpet player. He also owns and manages Powell Music, a company that contracts musicians for corporate and private events, churches, and recording sessions.

He is the host of the podcast studioHFL which features interviews with legendary musicians and legends in the making.

He is also the founding member of The Forge, a professional touring brass quintet dedicated to performing the great works of artists including Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, and many others from the era of Classic Rock.

As an orchestral musician Larry serves as Principal Trumpet with the Owensboro Symphony (KY), the Marion Philharmonic (IN), the Anderson Symphony (IN), and with the Muncie Symphony (IN). He is also busy as a session player in the recording studios in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. When not gigging on land, he works on ships for Carnival UK on Cunard lines and P&O lines as lead trumpet in the showbands.

Major instructors and influences have been Vincent DiMartino, Marvin ‘Chappy’ Perry, Bob Wood, Dan Gosling (the Chopsaver guy), Jared Rodin, George Weimer, and Roger Ingram, world-class musicians who have been invaluable teachers and audition coaches since the early ‘90’s, providing encouragement and solid musical advice and experience.

He has performed with artists including Wayne Newton, Sandy Patti, Bill & Gloria Gaither, Leann Rimes, Twila Paris, James Galway, Andre Watts, STYX, the Beach Boys, Allen Vizzutti, Amy Grant, Ronnie Milsap, Peter Frampton, Mannheim Steamroller, Linda Eder, Byron Stripling, and many others.
